Biomimicry as Applied to Space Robotics with Specific Reference to the Martian Environment

چکیده
The reverse engineering of biological organisms has recently become a significant research effort to solve engineering problems by learning from biological solutions to similar problems imposed by the natural environment. Such biological solutions offer insights into alternative strategies for designing engineering systems. Biological systems represent millions of years (billions of years in the case of microbes) of trial-anderror learning through natural selection according to the most stringent of metrics – survival. There is thus much that engineers can learn from biology to emulate in their design of engineering systems – this is biomimicry. It is our goal to assess the current stateof-the-art in biomimicry and to apply this knowledge to the next generation of space robotics. We are currently involved with a study through the European Space Agency where the main focus is to examine the biomimicry-related research activities through Europe and around the world and ascertain whether these research activities could be inspiration to create innovative space systems. Primarily, we are investigating four different biomimetic locomotion systems: walking, flying, digging, and slithering. However, this study does not stop simply at locomotion. We are also investigating biomimetic materials, mechanisms and processes, behaviour and control, sensors, and adaptability. The prime focus of this paper, however, will be bio-inspired locomotion and autonomous control.

Mankind is always interacting with an environment that contains various meanings and layers with each of which the environment behaves differently, and on the other hand, this behavior is effectively reflected back to the environment. In recent decades, experimental environmental psychology has sought to help solve the issues posed to human societies by pursuing two objectives of theoretical un...
متن کاملDifferential Flatness Method Based on Pre-set Guidance and Control Subsystem Design for a Surface to Surface Flying Vehicle (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The purpose of this paper is to design a guidance and control system and evaluate the performance of a sample surface‑to‑surface flying object based on preset guidance with a new prospective. In this study, the main presented idea is usage of unique property of governor differential equations in order to design and develop a controlled system. Thereupon a set of system output variables have bee...
متن کاملThe Identity of Moses in Surah Al-Qasas with Reference to Time and Space
The question of identity in a narrative text is one of the most influential questions that need further study. The variations in the factors that may affect the concept of identity add to the complexity of the narrative text. The study aims at analyzing the main phases, stages, themes and events of Moses’ life story as part of the narrative discourse. The effects of time and place on the main e...

Regarding the key theme of the paper, visual privacy, it is first necessary to review the content of urban studies to find out why/how has privacy been discussed or ignored in urban studies to date. Instead of direct reference to the privacy, the urban studies literature mainly highlights the concepts of territoriality and personal space, two ways in which people create different types of bound...
متن کاملDual Space Control of a Deployable Cable Driven Robot: Wave Based Approach
Known for their lower costs and numerous applications, cable robots are an attractive research field in robotic community. However, considering the fact that they require an accurate installation procedure and calibration routine, they have not yet found their true place in real-world applications. This paper aims to propose a new controller strategy that requires no meticulous calibration and ...
